About the Author

Dr. Marc Zvi Brettler is the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies at Brandeis University. He contributed to all volumes of the My People's Prayer Book: Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries series, winner of the National Jewish Book Award, and to My People's Passover Haggadah: Traditional Texts, Modern Commentaries; Who by Fire, Who by Water―Un'taneh Tokef; All These Vows―Kol Nidre; May God Remember: Memory and Memorializing in Judaism―Yizkor; and We Have Sinned: Sin and Confession in Judaism―Ashamnu and Al Chet (all Jewish Lights). He is coeditor of The Jewish Annotated New Testament and The Jewish Study Bible, which won the National Jewish Book Award; co-author of The Bible and the Believer; and author of How to Read the Jewish Bible, among other books and articles. He has also been interviewed on National Public Radio’s Fresh Air by Terry Gross.

This is a fine book, as are all I've read in the series. The Kindle edition is poor, though, especially considering its high price. The Kindle edition is now $28.30; for reference, hardcover is now $29.79. The Kindle edition does seem to have been created from sources, that is, from the same files used to create the paper book. So at least OCR was not used, so OCR-type errors were avoided. But one of the core jobs of conversion, "unbreaking" lines, was done poorly. I found over a hundred typos (errors) in this book, most of which are failures to unbreak lines correctly. These failures take the form of hard line breaks where there should be none, and hyphens where there should be none.I've contacted the publisher about these problems. The publisher has little interest in taking advantage of the ability to correct Kindle books. Many (most?) publishers feel the same, so I can't really fault them. The publishing industry has not really moved away from various practices and attitudes inherited from paper publishing. This includes an attitude towards corrections as something rare, high-risk, and only coupled with a new paper printing or new paper edition. Unfortunately the practices and attitudes leading to high quality initial releases have *not*, by and large, been inherited in the transition from paper to digital. So us customers are stuck with a lot of low-quality ebooks that probably won't be fixed.

Fabulous book in fabulous series. Easily accessible to all and filled with structure and historical material. Resource frequently used in our Beit Midrash.

Rabbi Hoffman's book, My People's Prayer Book, Vol. 3, is an exquisit addition to any Jewish library. This book, which concentrates on Psukei DiZimra, morning prayers, teaches both the experienced and neophyte person, what these particular prayers mean, their significance in the morning service and why they need to be said. All three of Hoffman's books on prayer have proved a great assett in the classroom and in my personal spiritual aspiration to learn more.
