Where do I begin? First of all the author did a superb effort creating a world based on possible outcomes of our current state of affairs. Concentration of wealth, the shrinking middle class, environmental destruction and religious fundamentalism were even more extreme in the future. Amusingly, the twist here is not so unbelievable . The reconstitution of slavery as the height of human depravity was perfect plot device. The slave / master relationship could have gone south if not handled with delicate hands. This was not a story about personal bondage but societal domination by the few. Thankfully, the author skillfully steered clear of a typical slave / master saga. Instead, the stage was set for a wider audience to hear the message. Before ending I wanted to emphasise the entertaining value of this work besides its thought provoking content. I did appreciate the limited erotic scenes . The suggestions were sufficient. The pacing , characters and plots were done well. Admittedly, I did have to suspend believe in a few action scenes where Spartack is an unstoppable killing machine. The question that does surface is how does one balance our instinctive reactions verses our rational responses? Yes, if anything this work will keep your attention.
I enjoyed this story's varied characters as well as the futuristic gadgets. The predictions the author presents of a future with a. more evident class system plus the political atmosphere in 2115 are well on their way. Spartak is a young man on a scholarship working hard to continue his attendance at an elitist high school who is unfortunately naturally good looking enough to be the first person to become a legally owned slave. That event, a kidnapping, a murder, plus the wealthy competing with wealthy makes this story all the more realistic. I admit to being a little hesitant about the possible sexual content. It was not graphic and less explicit to what 16 year olds already are aware of. Heterosexual, gay and lesbian activities have been openly discussed in high schools for years now, including acted upon. The bullying by students or others for no reason other than personal enjoyment has been going on at schools for years now. Books like Twilight and the Divergent Series were similar. The story is an exciting, moral young man's adventure with surprisingly fast paced fight scenes that held my interest. The Chronicles of Spartak would make an entertaining movie with its moral lessons for none readers and unique electrical inventions. Some things are not just black or white. Enjoy........
There were a few minor issues in the kindle version but nothing horrible. I do not know how they put these books into kindle format and whether that explains why sometimes the text is odd. The story line was good and though it was a bit slow on the start, it improved. The major flaw I saw was the almost immediate "Stockholm syndrome" falling in love bit. I just fine that whole idea rather implausible as written. There were some other wholes in the plot development but nothing that stood out like the "slave boy falls for master immediately" bit.I know this sounds a bit harsh but I did enjoy the story line in general. It just seems like the author was not completely clear where he was going with his character development and plot, thus making things a bit mushy.
Let me start by saying it took me a while to pick up this book. A bi-sexual teenager dealing with a hugely dystopian society set in the future – not the type of story I would normally gravitate towards. Having said that, I am so glad I decided to read this novel! It turns out that the seeds for this futuristic 2015 society are very evident today, particularly in our current political climate. We’re already losing the middle class, replacing it instead with the “haves†and “have nots.†And the “haves†in this book (known as the “barronialsâ€) believe they are the chosen, and that’s why they are so rich. The practice of using global economics to impoverish Americans is also something we’re beginning to see, as well as the trend towards part-time work with no benefits, leaving many to scramble to make ends meet by taking on multiple low-paying jobs.A related theme involves suppressing the number of people who can vote to help a group stay in power. Sound familiar? What was really scary early on in this book was the easy leap to legal slavery. And the reason it was so frightening is that it was really easy to see how that might naturally occur once a group in power start believing they have divine superiority, making it less problematic and more convenient to start treating others as less than human. A year ago I would have thought that a highly unrealistic theme to introduce in a book set only 100 years in the future, but today, I’m not so sure. A whole lot of ugliness has been unleashed recently that I didn’t realize still existed.Living in a country formed under the “freedom of religion†belief, I was also quite bothered by the concept of America having an “official†religion. It was Christianity is Spartak’s world, and would likely be today if some of the zealots out there today have their way, and continue trying to legislate their beliefs on others. There are tons more relevant themes explored in this book, including the idea of dissent being unacceptable to government elites, a biblical view on women’s rights, a societal anti-terrorist obsession, turning over scientific research to the private sector and more. In light of our current societal turmoil, this passage really made me pause. “What I don’t understand is why people follow such transparently evil human beings,†asked one character. The response: “People see what they want to see and are sometimes hungry for deception, avoiding what should be obvious. Welcome to the real world.â€Well done, Steve Coulter. This is a truly great and gripping read.
