What a way to end 2016! Ponniyin Selvan, my first historical fiction book! This is the second book in the series. Such a beautiful story and wonderful characters! Can't wait to read the third book. The translator has done justice to the original writing. However, I believe nothing can equal the original; hence the 4 star rating.

Kalki's tale of Raja Raja Chola is famed among Tamizhs. Vandiyathevan, Kundhavai and Arulmozhi are household names. But the language barrier that kept me from accessing the great story just melted away. While the editing could be tighter (typos and repetition of paragraphs), the translation is true to the original modern epic, preserving with high fidelity not just some of the tamizh words but the cultural sense.

Best English translation I've found of Ponniyin Selvan. Can't wait for the remaining 3 books to be translated!

This is true epic created by one of most prolific writers of our times. In fact such a magnificent and epochal setting, with context, drama, intrigue and historical authenticity could only be one of a kind. This translation into English unlocks a huge new world to many like me.
