From the Author
Turning Suffering and Pain into Joy and Hope; for ChildrenWhyDoesMommyHurt.comThe children of people with invisible illness suffer quietly. As soon as my son, now 3.5, began to communicate, I tried to explain, in words that he could understand, why mommy was unable to play as much as he wanted me to, why I couldn't stay awake longer than a few hours, and why I grimaced and cried from pain so frequently. How can one explain to a young child, when this is his "normal," that I wish things could be different for him? That he has done nothing wrong when I am crying. That I desperately want to get down on the floor and play blocks, but I literally CAN'T.The guilt of raising a child under these circumstances is overwhelming. I often force myself to smile, play, and be strong for him. To walk him a mile and a half to the playground and back, only to lock myself in my room in tears of exhaustion upon arriving back home. To play catch, legos, playdoh, color... all of the joys of childhood, joys that take so so many "spoons". After putting him to bed, I often leave his room and immediately lay down in the hallway and cry; exhausted and overwrought with guilt. "I'm not doing enough. I can't do enough. I will never be good enough for him."In order to help my son cope and understand my disease, I searched the far reaches of the internet for a childrens book on Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or even just having a sick parent in general. I found absolutely nothing. Shocked and appalled at the void, I chose the obvious solution;; I wrote my own. I had written a few books for him already; one called "Jimmy's Family Story book". Using photograms, I told the story of his mommy and daddy in our younger years; how we met, our wedding, his birth, and his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. It quickly became his favorite book; no surprise for a toddler- "a book about ME!") At first, the plan was just to write this new book solely for my son. However, I could not stop thinking of the millions of other children in the same situation, and the other parents, as desperate as I was. I knew something had to be done to help those families. Thus began the saga of "Why Does Mommy Hurt?"WhyDoesMommyHurt.com

Based on the other gushing reviews, I was expecting more from this book than it had to offer. While I don't have fibromyalgia, I do have rheumatoid arthritis - and a three year old - so I was really hoping this book would speak to her in a way that would get her to understand that mommy hurts a lot, is tired a lot, and absolutely cannot play rough and tumble (like daddy does). My little girl is whip smart, but could not connect the mommy in the book to me. She has a very active imagination, and the simple story of a little boy whose mommy hurts really didn't capture her attention at all. Normally she wants books read to her over and over. This one she has no interest in. It is, sadly, quite boring. This is probably a good book for a 5 or 6 year old who has a bit of a firmer grasp on the world, but for a 3 year old who runs around half the time declaring she's either a princess or a super hero (or a puppy)? Not so much.
This is lovely book that all parents struggling with chronic pain, fatigue, depression, or any disabling medical condition can use to help their young children understand why they are the way they are. It can help prevent kids from blaming themselves and can reduce anger and frustration. It is wonderfully written and the bright, colorful illustrations really bring it to life.
Whilst the message and information are the important point to this book, the colourful drawings really add to the appeal. The story is written age appropriately, but I could see this being shared with older kids and adults, since it explains what living with fibromyalgia and chronic pain is all about. There are few, if any, books of this type for young children, so I applaud the author for helping to explain a confusing subject in such an empathetic way. Being a fellow sufferer, I guess that's not so surprising. My one niggle was that on my iPad the pictures appeared to be small and had to be stretched out to full size to make them easily readable. I gave the benefit of the doubt that it could just be on my reader, and didn't knock a point off for this small inconvenience. Well done Elizabeth Christy!
As my daughter said, “Meh...†The information is good. It’s a starting point for conversations. But the illustrations are slightly creepy. And much like most kids’ book written about clinical topics it doesn’t flow well feel like a kids’ book. It’s more like a kids’ informational pamphlet. But it’s a good place to start.
I just recently met this author on a social site and have grown to admire her so much. Instead of just complaining about her pain and using it as a crutch for sympathy, she has found a way to use her condition to reach out and help others who are suffering with chronic pain; and not just them, but their children as well. Children don't always understand things that are intangible but the way this author explains "invisible pain"(from a child's perspective) is very impressive. The verbiage is descriptive enough to inform readers of all ages about the medical aspect of chronic pain illnesses, yet simple enough for a young child to understand. Great job Elizabeth! You will help so many parents with this book. I am proud to have met you:)
This book is very cute! It was difficult to find a book on this topic for kids so I was glad to come across it. I would say it's for about 8 years old and under. For children older than that they pretty much have what the book covers figured out. It doesn't go into details of what hurts or why so this book could be used for all kinds of illnesses.
In a simple message, that is true to the parent with chronic illness or chronic pain, this small book explains in a lovely way the times that the mom in the story can do things and the times she can't do things. It's a worthwhile tool for younger and elementary age kids.
I just purchased and read this in 3 min flat. It was pretty basic. I guess my 9 year old twins will get a LITTLE something out of this. But the book is definitely for smaller kids. My kids might even find it corny. They will read this in 5 -10 min. I really wish there was a book for older kids to understand Fibromyalgia, Lupus, & other similar autoimmune diseases. Glad it was only $3.95
