Review
"Andrew Loomis’ books were a formative influence on my life and art. My mother is an illustrator herself who worked in the era of Loomis’ heyday, and she passed his art instruction books on to me. Andrew Loomis’ instruction of how to draw the human figure was one of the first teachings that I would study, inspiring me to try and make my own artwork more realistic. My entire approach to drawing and painting superheroes owes its genesis to Loomis’ work." - Alex Ross"Holding this book is like holding a time capsule, beautifully preserved in spirit for the next crop of future artists in the generations to come." - Art Sketch

I consider myself a self taught artist, due to the fact that yes I have taken art every year elementry to hughschool, but all I Have ever taken from those classes is redundant "let's learn the color wheel!" But what I really wanted to grow from Ive gotten through YouTube and deviantart (the first pic is where I am now)Not even half way through this first chapter I'm in shock that for the first time in my life (counting hours of how to videos) I have learned perspective in a way that hits home ,and how to actually use it. TWO PAGES gave me more understanding of how to use horizons, my worst understanding in art. I feel my understanging of realism is ok, but I've been limited to single person portraits. I'm so excited to use this book and see what else it can show me!
You can't go wrong with Andrew Loomis art books. This one was recommended by my art instructor. It's definitely reflective of an earlier time period as far as the style of hair and even drawing. Loomis does a good job of explaining how his career as an illustrator developed. He understands all of the fears and apprehensions of a beginner artist. If you really listen to what he writes and apply it I think it could be of great benefit. This is applicable even in our digital age where you may be making digital drawings. So while the style may look vintage the instruction is still relevant. I drew the figure from the book using graphite and a black Prismacolor pencil.
As an art professor of figure drawing and anatomy, and a professional artist, be assured, this is THE ONE BOOK that you need for figure drawing.Time tested and the 'Bible of Figure Drawing'. Don't be put off by the dated looking hair or poses. This is the motherlode of all information. If you actually follow it, and carefully draw the exercises, you would be better than most graduates of art school. Old editions are fine. Get it!
Most books on figure drawing go something like this: Step 1-sketch the figure; Step 2-fill in all the details. That's a HUGE step from the sketch to the detailed drawing!!! Many so-called figure drawing instructional books are simply portfolios of the author's artwork with very little instruction. Tsk.Loomis is different. He goes through all the intermediate steps you need to draw a figure. You learn to draw "manikins" from your imagination, with body parts in the proper proportions, and in all kinds of poses. He also teaches you how to draw the figure in perspective. Once you master that, he covers all the anatomy you need to know in order to create realistic figures. Finally with all that mastered, he covers clothing & shading the figure (value) along with how to draw some of the more complex body parts like heads, hands, and feet.As a professor I can state confidently that the step-by-step teaching approach in this book is the best that you can find, outside of maybe taking a class. But even most figure drawing classes don't cover the material in this book!To summarize you learn the fundamentals of drawing figures: proportion, anatomy, perspective, values, color, and knowledge of mediums and materials. The only drawback for today's students (who I find mainly want to draw Manga and Anime-style characters) is that the drawing style is dated. But if you master the fundamentals in this book you can easily adapt them to other genres.- Professor F., past-Director of UNM's Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media Program
This book is a must-have reference book. It's well organized and the information covered is actually useful and practical. This is a wonderful reference book. I would buy it again and I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about realistic figure drawing, proportions, etc.
It’s a great book by a great artist/illustrator. If you’re interested in the old school, pre digital and appreciate the classic methods, it’s for you. Most of the info in the book is available on line for free and in more updated ways and probably clearer. But Loomis, like Frank Reilly were giants in their time, hoping I will absorb some wisdom (:. Many pages of his sketch’s of nudes in different poses I find useless. But the diagrams and his insights are useful. Mainly I wanted it for my art book collection. It is a classic.
I am not able to attend art school and I felt like I was at a disadvantage because I didn't have any instruction to supplement the few figure drawing classes I have taken. Well this book made me feel more confident and just reading the Loomis' commentary is very soothing within itself. He explains things so well and simply. Whenever I need to feel inspired and uplifted to draw, I just read a segment from this book and I learn some new insight every time. It's seriously a good book to have for any artist and it's of great benefit for artists today to learn from artists from the past. Just the commentary in the opening pages alone is enough to make me love this book.
If you have tried "Fun with a Pencil" and then "Drawing the head & Hands", this is the next step in Andrew Loomis's art technique. It's wonderful.
