I bought this for a former member of the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) so that she could read of another person's experience with the church. It was a gift. The book was graciously received and I am listening to the Audible version and have made it to chapter 6. As I grow in empathy and concern for former members, I feel this memoir is an insightful look in doomsday cults and racism in apocalyptic church prophecies. As a religious studies student this look is key to me as something beyond the stale record of Wikipedia or former church member websites, and glossing over of certain splinter groups of the schismatic remnant of the WCG. The childlike look at life is conveyed well and the questions and the answers of children back to friends, make for a very good format for learning about the authors early life and parents. The writer, a professor of creative writing at Emerson College, must be a very accomplished instructor as his writing is compelling and spellbinding. I highly recommend this book as one of interest to anyone, religious or otherwise, as it deals with central themes of coming of age and growing up.

Well written and fascinating. Each chapter is like a short story in itself...sometimes leaving the reader wanting a bit fuller account. I felt more needed to be said about the cult and its doomsday message and the white suprematist aspect--what draws the reader to the title and subtitle. But still an engaging account of a childhood's experiences in a transitional environment.

I LOVED this book! It was a page-turner. I was into the memoir, from the beginning. I LOVED his biological and his procreated family stories. In the biological family, while there were not a lot of extraneous possessions, the daily life of the family was filled with love, structure, discipline and other values that resonate with readers. The religious devotion of this family just resonates. Having two blind parents is something that few can truly understand and appreciate, but Jerald Walker strikes some very delicate balances between for example, family love and human mistakes, between empathy for blind parents and childhood immaturity, between religious principles and medical necessity. In each of these cases, the human side wins out. These compromises were never perfect, but they were real. All lead to making the story credible and significant. Jerald is a gifted, talented story teller. Hands down, this is an exceptional read.

This is another book where the book's description can give the wrong impression about the story. Don't imagine you are going to read about a bizarre family or childhood. Even though Jerald Walker's family did belong to a "doomsday religion" and both his parents were blind, they were still a normal type of family. Much of their lives revolved around their church, but much of it was typical everyday life in the 1960s and 1970s. While the author's parents gave the church money that they should have kept for themselves and their children, they never went overboard and never did anything extreme when they thought "the end" might be near. What's so poignant about this story is that one reason Mr. Walker's parents continued to believe in their religion was because it promised they would see again. Both totally lost their vision as children. Yet they were neither desperate individuals nor fools.Jerald Walker himself was a sweet child, who totally believed what he was being taught about God; so much so that he gave up the opportunity to attend a school that probably would have changed his life for good; because he felt it was best to stay close to his family, since he was always hearing "the end" was coming. Yet he was no fool, either. When an older brother starts introducing him to new ideas, as well as drugs and alcohol, his innocent childhood ends. This part of his life is apparently what was covered in his previous memoir Street Shadows: A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption. I now plan on reading that book, but am happy I read this one first. I'm happy I met the author when he was a sweet, naive child, fervently believing things about life and God, hoping to save others who did not believe, to keep them from horrid suffering . . . such as from really painful boils.*Alas for You
