About the Author

ROY PETER CLARK teaches writing to professional journalists, to teachers, and to students of all ages at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has been an English Professor at Auburn University, a writing coach for the St. Petersburg Times, a reporter, feature writer, and critic. He has been involved since 1980 in Writers' Camp in Florida, a workshop for young writers and their teachers.

Children in elementary school aren't too young to be empowered to write. Roy Peter Clark is the country's best writing coach who 20-plus years ago wrote a book that even today empowers children to write well using tools that any teacher or mentor will find helpful as they encourage and shape young writers. The book aims to help teachers guide first- through sixth-graders but I can see its usefulness in mentoring older students and even adults. I've used this in mentoring kids to write better and clearer and hope to further employ it in the future. It's a little on the academic side stylewise and at points hard to wade through but overall a very helpful tome that could revolutionize any school's writing program. One especially interesting concept is how he uses peer editing to enable him to maximize his time with each student in a classroom of 30, plus asking three simple questions that the kids can ask each other rather than being dependent on the instructor to facilitate all learning. I especially appreciated his explanation of grammar in context [of a sentence within a paragraph, for instance] instead of having kids learn grammar using random sentences. Wish this book were still in print but at least old copies remain in circulation.

I'm a professional writer for a large corporation and have a personal collection of about 80 books on writing. This is my favorite one because it is simple to read and provides wonderful advice to help anyone write a great story. I attribute a writing award I won all to this book.

Great resource for teaching students about journalism.

This book looks like it will help me a great deal. I haven't read it yet, but I have skimmed through it and it has a lot of information.
